Although this course is originally designed as a Post-Level III Orff Certification or its equivalent in Orff-Schulwerk we are open to considering applications from anyone within the following categories.  

  • Orff-Schulwerk Teachers

  • Educators (K-12 and collegiate levels) of the performing, creative, and visual arts; cultural studies, history, and religion

  • K-12 and collegiate level teachers in the arts (performing, creative, and visual arts); history, cultural, social and religious studies. 

  • Early Childhood educators.

  • General educators with a background or interest in the arts of West African cultures

  • Professionals and students in the fields of percussion, ethnomusicology, dance/movement, and performance practice

  • Enthusiasts of world music drumming, dancing, percussion, children’s games 

  • West African/Ghanaian music, dance, rhythm and cultural enthusiasts

  • Music Therapists

  • Multicultural music educators and advocates

  • Anyone interested in West African indigenous knowledge

ELIGIBILITY

Enrollment is open to all worldwide. You do not need to be enrolled at any college or university to participate in this study program.

COURSE & HOUSING COST (All prices in US Dollars)

Tuition/Course Fee (June 20 July 5):             
Non-Credit:    $1,475 per person
Credit:        $1,695 per person
(4 continuing education credits from Dominican University of California, San Rafael, CA)

Housing/Room & Board (15 nights: June 20-July 5):     
Single Occupancy (1 to a room):     $1,530 per person
Double Occupancy (2 to a room):   $1,005 per person^

^A double occupancy room includes 1 Standard Bed with mattress and Single Bed with mattress

What is Included in the Total Cost?

  • 74 hrs of instructional workshops and lecture-demonstrations

  • Hotel lodging at Dzodze, and Accra (June 22-July 5)

  • Daily breakfast & dinner at Hotel in Dzodze and Accra (June 22-July 5)

  • Airport Pick-up and Drop-off (on June 22 and July 5 only)

  • All group in-country transport from June 22 – July 5, 2023. (This includes group transportation from Accra to Dzodze on June 22 and July 5)

  • Group organized cultural events

  • Onsite teaching-learning resources

  • Group classes in traditional drumming, dancing, games, & singing

  • Group lectures onsite

  • Performances of traditional music and dance

  • Field Trips to nearby traditional villages, ceremonies, and sights of interest

  • Group tours of southern Volta Region

  • Wi-Fi internet access (speed varies by location. Reliable network access in hotel rooms not guaranteed)

  • Bottled Water (5 bottles per day, additional bottles may be purchased from Hotel or local businesses)

What is NOT included in the total cost?

  • Economy Air fare (to and from Ghana (ACC): Estimated $1,500 - $2,200 (Depends on departure origin, choice of airline and time of purchase. Before you buy your ticket, please see the Schedule Outline)

  • Daily lunch in Dzodze: Estimated at $6 - $10 per plate

  • Meals/drinks off site (outside of Dzodze): Estimated $50 - $200 

  • Excursions and other local transportation (other than organized in-country group travels including optional activities. See optional activities Cost)

  • Visa fee: Cost depends on country of residence and application.

  • Vaccination/Malaria prophylaxis/Medical consultation fees and other Travel Health requirements including those related to COVID-19: Cost depends on insurance and country of residence

  • International travel health insurance. Cost depends on insurance company

  • Additional private instruction: Optional $10 - $15/hour
